Greenville New Bern Washington, NC, October 22, 2026 —

The Feline Freedom Society, a cat rescue in Eastern Carolina, has temporarily paused adoptions of black cats in the period leading up to Halloween. The organization cited concerns about superstitions and potential negative intentions toward black cats during the spooky season.

The pause applies to black cats only. Adoptions for cats of other colors and for kittens continue as normal, according to the information provided about the rescue’s decision. The summary does not specify how many animals are affected or whether the pause applies to every black cat in the rescue’s care.

The organization’s name and general location were provided, but a specific town, the date the pause began and its expected duration were not. No date for when black cat adoptions may resume was provided. The rescue’s detailed adoption procedures during the pause, including whether prospective adopters can make inquiries or submit applications, were also not specified.

The decision is described as temporary and connected to the period before Halloween. The stated concern is that superstitions or negative intentions could affect black cats during that season. No specific incidents or threats were reported in the summary, and it does not describe any inspection, legal action or change to the rescue’s broader adoption operations.

For now, the distinction is limited to the type of cat available for adoption: black cat adoptions are paused, while adoptions for other-colored cats and kittens continue as usual. Further details about the policy’s timeline or implementation were not provided.
