Foggy Bottom-GWU-West End posts a Walk Score of 97, tied for third-highest in the District and 20 points above the citywide average
Foggy Bottom, a Northwest Washington, D.C. neighborhood, ranks among the most walkable in the city, ahead of better-known neighborhoods including Georgetown and Capitol Hill, according to Walk Score’s published neighborhood rankings for the District of Columbia.
Walk Score, a web-based walkability rating platform, scores U.S. addresses and neighborhoods from 0 to 100 based on walking distance to daily destinations such as grocery stores, restaurants, and schools, along with pedestrian factors such as block length and intersection density. It rates transit access and bikeability separately, according to its published methodology. Washington, D.C., which Walk Score ranks as the fifth most walkable large city in the U.S., has a citywide average Walk Score of 77.
Foggy Bottom-GWU-West End scores 97, 20 points above the city average. That ties it with Logan Circle and Mount Vernon Square and puts it behind only U Street (99) and Dupont Circle (98). It outranks Georgetown, which scores 85, and Capitol Hill, which scores 88.
The neighborhood takes in the George Washington University campus area and West End, which Walk Score does not rank as its own neighborhood. Many apartment communities are located within it, including Columbia Plaza, a five-tower complex at Virginia Avenue and 23rd Street NW near the Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro station. Columbia Plaza’s address scores 91 on Walk Score, still within the top “Walker’s Paradise” range.

The District Department of Transportation’s Pedestrian Friendliness Index, part of the District’s moveDC transportation planning data, scores walkability block by block using sidewalk connectivity, building setbacks, and street network design. In a Premier Online Marketing review of the index, the West End, Foggy Bottom, and GWU area ranks among the top five of the city’s 46 official neighborhood clusters, ahead of Georgetown.

The figures cited in this release reflect Walk Score’s published rankings for Washington, D.C. neighborhoods, accessed September 2026, at walkscore.com. The Pedestrian Friendliness Index was posted to the District’s open data portal in July 2022. Premier averaged block-level index scores within each of the District’s 46 neighborhood clusters; depending on how blocks along cluster borders are counted, the West End, Foggy Bottom, and GWU cluster ranks between second and fifth.
